Little Monsters director replaces Neill Blomkamp on RoboCop Returns

November 23, 2019 by Gary Collinson

It may have lost director Neill Blomkamp due to scheduling issues back in August, but it seems that MGM is still moving ahead with its plans for RoboCop Returns with THR revealing that the studio has found his replacement.

Fresh from the Lupita Nyong’o-headlined zombie comedy Little Monsters, Australian filmmaker Abe Forsythe has boarded the project, which will serve as a direct sequel to Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 classic and is based upon an old script from original RoboCop writers Ed Neumier and Michael Miner.

As well as directing, Forsythe is set to pen a new draft of the screenplay, which was last worked on by Justin Rhodes (Terminator: Dark Fate).

As yet, there’s no word on a potential release date for RoboCop Returns, nor any casting news (although original RoboCop actor Peter Weller is said to have turned down an approach from Blomkamp). We do however have a very brief logline, which reads: “Anarchy reigns and the fate of Detroit hangs in the balance as RoboCop makes his triumphant return to fight crime and corruption.”

Are you happy that RoboCop Returns still seems to be moving forward? Do you think it could succeed where other recent revival-reboots (Terminator: Dark Fate, etc.) have failed? Let us know in the comments below or on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
