Logan director on how he “got away” with an R-rated Wolverine movie

February 28, 2017 by Samuel Brace

The director of the hotly anticipated Wolverine solo movie, Logan, has spoken in a recent interview on how he got away with making the R-rated movie.

Fans of the most famous of X-Men have long wanted the character to be given a bloody on-screen adventure, allowing Wolverine to be fully unleashed and unrestrained.

Thanks to these wishes and to the success of the Deadpool – another adult orientated superhero movie – audiences now finally have what they wanted, with Logan’s release a matter of days away.

The director of Logan, James Mangold, comes across as rather passionate about his creation in a recent interview with Uproxx and spoke about how he pulled off the movie’s R-rating.

“Myself and my collaborators – particularly in the cutting room; a lot of the people I’ve worked with for many movies – we all sat watching this movie in the last stages of the cut and said we can’t believe we got away with this. So we do know what you mean – meaning all of us recognize that the movie feels, to us, very personal, very intimate, very handcrafted. I mean, let’s put it another way, which was quite intentional”.

Mangold also spoke about how he wanted Logan not to be just a continuation of what has come before and to not feed into the machine of superhero movie marketing.

“I was not coming back, nor was Hugh Jackman, to make a kind of artifact that exists to both continue a kind of DVD suite that they sell every year in a package. To move toys and t-shirts, and to kind of just facilitate the further marketing of a franchise”.

Mangold also talked about explaining the film’s gore to the studio, stating that:  “I said I wanted it R. First of all, the studios are not stupid, and they recognize that they’ve been making… I’m not naming names and I don’t think it’s true universally, but there’s a lot of bloated $200 million movies that have come out”.

It seems Mangold was as keen as anyone to make Logan R-rated and fans can see if this truly is what they wanted when the film finally lands in the coming days.

In the near future, a weary Logan cares for an ailing Professor X in a hide out on the Mexican border. But Logan’s attempts to hide from the world and his legacy are up-ended when a young mutant arrives, being pursued by dark forces.

Logan is being helmed by The Wolverine director James Mangold and will see Hugh Jackman joined in the cast by Patrick Stewart as Professor X, along with new additions Boyd Holbrook, Richard E. Grant, Stephen Merchant, Dafne Keen, Eriq La Salle, Elizabeth Rodriguez and Elise Neal. It is set for release on March 1st in the UK and March 3rd in North America.
