Marvel’s New Warriors showrunner shares look at Squirrel Girl, says show was cancelled for being “too gay”

September 12, 2021 by Gary Collinson

It’s been two years since it was that the plug had been pulled on Marvel’s New Warriors series, a half-hour live-action comedy series which would have focussed on the characters of Mister Immortal, Squirrel Girl, Night Thrasher, Speedball, Microbe and Debrii.

The project originally received a ten-episode order from Freeform, and got as far as shooting its pilot episode which was said to have “tested through the roof”. However, Freeform was ultimately unable to find a place for the show in its schedule, with Marvel then shopping the series unsuccessfully to other Disney-owned outlets before finally pulling the plug.

Aside from a behind-the-scenes photo featuring cast members Derek Theler (Mister Immortal), Milana Vayntrub (Squirrel Girl), Jeremy Tardy (Night Thrasher), Calum Worthy (Speedball), Matthew Moy (Microbe) and Kate Comer (Debrii), we’ve seen nothing at all from New Warriors, although that changed this week when former showrunner Kevin Biegel shared a look at Vayntrub’s Doreen Green in full costume complete with prosthetic squirrel tail, as well as video of his children watching Squirrel Girl in action…

Biegel’s original tweets – and indeed his full Twitter account – has since been deleted, although that may have less to do with the Squirrel Girl images as his comments on why the show was ultimately cancelled, with the showrunner claiming it was because a “homophobic executive” felt it was “too gay”.

“There’s a show we wrote a few years ago,” wrote Biegel. “It was very very proudly gay. A SINGULAR power that be killed the show. Because it was too gay. A rich, straight, Brentwood turd. He got fired for being vile at his company.”

While Biegel kept quiet as to the identity of this executive, he did go on to confirm that it was not Jeph Loeb, the former head of Marvel Television who parted ways with the House of Ideas when the division was closed down and brought under the control of Kevin Feige’s Marvel Studios in later 2019.
