Max Steel leads the biggest movie flops of 2016

November 22, 2016 by Gary Collinson

With 2016 drawing to a close, Forbes has released its annual list of the biggest Hollywood flops from the past twelve months, with the Mattel toy adaptation Max Steel proving to be the biggest bomb of 2016, edging out Matthew McConaughey’s Free State of Jones to top spot by grossing just $4.4 million from a $10 million budget.

It’s also been a pretty dire year for comedies, which account for 50% of the top ten turkeys, which takes into account all Hollywood releases which opened wide on 2000 or more screens. Here’s the full list:

1. Max Steel ($4.4m take from $10m budget)
2. Free State of Jones ($23.2m take from $50m budget)
3. Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping ($9.5m take from $20m budget)
4. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies ($16.4m take from $28m budget)
5. Rachet & Clank ($11.8m take from $20m budget)
6. Keeping Up with the Joneses ($26.9m take from $40m budget)
7. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot ($24.9m take from $35m budget)
8. Grimsby ($28.7m take from $35m budget)
9. Snowden ($34.3m take from $40m budget)
10. Masterminds ($22m take from $25m budget)
