Mel Gibson developing The Passion of the Christ sequel Resurrection

Mel Gibson is reuniting with his Braveheart screenwriter Randall Wallace for a sequel to 2004’s biblical epic The Passion of the Christ.

According to Wallace, the project – tentatively titled Resurrection – will tell the story of the resurrection of Jesus, who was played by Jim Caviezel in the original movie.

“I always wanted to tell this story,” Wallace tells THR. “The Passion is the beginning and there’s a lot more story to tell.”

Wallace, who recently directed and co-wrote the faith-based drama Heaven Is for Real, revealed that he and Gibson started thinking about a sequel to The Passion whilst working on Gibson’s new film Hacksaw Ridge, which is set to open in November.

The Passion of the Christ is the most successful independent movie of all time (and the highest-grossing religious film and non-English language film), having earned $612 million during its theatrical run in 2004.
