Michael C. Hall teases how Dexter: New Blood is “starkly different” from the original series

August 24, 2021 by Liam Waddington

Dexter Morgan actor Michael C. Hall has teased how the upcoming Dexter revival season, titled Dexter: New Blood, will be “starkly different” from the original series.

“It was very odd, at first. The notion that as much time had passed for the character, as had passed for me and for everyone, since we last shot, there was a sense of, “Oh, they just turn the cameras back on and he’s being living a life the entire time,” Hall said in an interview with Collider. “But the context of the show, the tone of the show, the look of the show, all of it is pretty starkly different, so that helped, just in terms of locating myself in a new place and not feeling like we were going back in time. He was still there and accessible. I had a sense of him that initially felt strange. Something you put away and then you’re resurrecting, it’s a pretty wild experience. The shoot was so demanding and intense that, after a couple of days, there really wasn’t much to do other than just focus on the work at hand, and that’s what we did.

Dexter: New Blood stars Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan with Clancy Brown as the primary villain Kurt Caldwell, the “unofficial mayor” of Iron Lake, as well as Jamie Chung (Lovecraft Country) as Molly, a famous true-crime podcaster, Oscar Wahlberg (Manchester By the Sea) as Zach, the captain of the Iron Lake High School wrestling team, Julia Jones (The Mandalorian) as Angela Bishop, Iron Lake’s Chief of Police, Alano Miller (Sylvie’s Love), Johnny Sequoyah (Believe), Jack Alcott (The Good Lord Bird) and Michael Cyril Creighton (Spotlight). Original series star Jennifer Carpenter will also return as Debra Morgan, Dexter’s adopted sister, in what is expected to be flashback scenes alongside John Lithgow’s return as The Trinity Killer.

Dexter: New Blood will pick up nearly 10 years after the conclusion of the original series with Dexter presumed dead and living far away from Miami after suffering several personal tragedies during the final season. Dexter has taken on the persona of Jim Lindsay, a nod to Dexter creator and author Jeff Lindsay, as he tries living a normal life but finds trouble keeping his dark urges in check.

Clyde Phillips is set to return as showrunner and executive producer with Marcos Siega, who previously directed nine episodes of the original series, set to return to executive produce and direct six of the 10-episodes in the limited series. Michael C. Hall will also serve as executive producer alongside John Goldwyn, Sara Colleton, Bill Carraro and Scott Reynolds.
