Netflix adapting Gears of War into feature film and animated series

November 8, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

Netflix are joining the cinematic video game revolution with the news that they’re adapting Gears of War into a feature-film and animated series.

Stuck in development hell for a long time at New Line Cinema, the rights then passed to Universal in 2016, and Netflix have now acquired them at a time when there’s a real appetite for video game franchises on the big screen.

THR reports that there are no filmmakers or producers attached at-the-moment, but the ambitious plan was to first adapt the video game saga into a live-action feature followed by an adult animated series.

Created by Epic Games, developed and managed by The Coalition, and owned and published by Xbox Game Studios, Gears of War is a third-person shooter game which focuses on the conflict between humanity and the subterranean reptilian hominids known as the Locust Horde on the world of Sera.

Launching in November 2006, the original Gears of War was followed by four sequels and a prequel, with latest chapter Gears 5 released in 2019. It has attracted over 45 million players worldwide and generated in excess of $1 billion in sales.
