Paul Walter Hauser reportedly in talks for Quentin Tarantino’s The Movie Critic

September 8, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Could we see the epic team-up of actor Paul Walter Hauser and Quentin Tarantino for the upcoming project The Movie Critic? This latest report puts Hauser in the center for this wild opportunity.

Scooper Daniel Richtman broke the news on his Pateron, reporting that Hauser is in talks to star as the titular critic in Tarantino’s final film. Hauer would star as 70s film critic Jim Sheldon, with the fictional character reportedly a critic for the Hollywood Press. We also have learned that the film will not be a “revenge film,” as many of Tarantino’s films can fall into.

The report from Richtman does note that these casting discussions happened pre-strikes. That means Hauser’s camp and Tarantino met before the SAG-AFTRA strike halted all productions and castings.

While Paul Walter Hauser and Quentin Tarantino have not worked together yet, Hauser has quite the stacked prestige film resume, including Richard Jewell, I, Tonya, and BlackKklansman. Recently, the actor won at this year’s Golden Globe Awards for Black Bird, taking home the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor award in a Television Movie or Limited Series.

There’s little known about The Movie Critic, but what details we have painted a pretty exciting picture – especially if you factor in Paul Walter Hauser at the center of the piece. We do know that the film will take place in 1977 California, and Tarantino says it “is based on a guy who really lived, but was never really famous, and he used to write movie reviews for a porno rag.”

This casting also links to what Tarantino noted about casting at the time, saying, “I haven’t decided yet, but it’s going to be somebody in the 35-year-old ballpark. It’ll definitely be a new leading man for me.” Hauser turns 37 this October and is a new leading man for the filmmaker.

There have been no other details regarding the plot, casting, and additional characters, but rumors have swirled that Samuel L. Jackson would also star in the film.

The screenplay for The Movie Critic has been completed, and production is ready to go once the Hollywood strikes come to a close.
