Picard series will be very different in tone to Star Trek: Discovery

December 15, 2018 by Gary Collinson

As part of its expansion of the Star Trek franchise, CBS All Access is developing a sequel to Star Trek: The Next Generation which will see Patrick Stewart reprising his fan favourite role as Jean-Luc Picard.

The new series will catch up with the former U.S.S. Enterprise captain some twenty years after we last saw him in Star Trek: Nemesis, and executive producer Alex Kurtzman has been chatting to Entertainment Weekly about the show, revealing that it will have a very different tone to that of Star Trek: Discovery.

“It’s an extremely different rhythm than Discovery,” said Kurtzman. “Discovery is a bullet. Picard is a very contemplative show. It will find a balance between the speed of Discovery and the nature of what Next Gen was, but I believe it will have its own rhythm. ‘More grounded’ is not the right way to put it, because season 2 of Discovery is also grounded. It will feel more … real world? If that’s the right way to put it. Without revealing too much about it, people have so many questions about Picard and what happened to him, and the idea we get to take time to answer those questions in the wake of the many, many things he’s had to deal with in Next Gen is really exciting.”

The as-yet-untitled Picard series is slated to arrive in late 2019. Meanwhile, CBS All Access has the second season of Discovery incoming in January, and it also working on a Discovery spinoff centred on Michelle Yeoh’s Georgiou, as well as the animated comedy series Star Trek: Lower Decks.
