Robert Pattinson on his Batman casting and putting on the Batsuit for the first time

September 4, 2019 by Liam Waddington

Robert Pattinson has described his experience of suiting up as the Batman for the first time in preparation for Matt Reeves’ upcoming DC film, The Batman.

In a recent interview with Variety, Pattinson described donning the iconic batsuit as transformative but pretty humiliating and rather an uncomfortable experience:

“It’s maybe the craziest thing I’ve ever done in terms of movie stuff,” Pattinson says. “I put it on. I remember saying to Matt, ‘It does feel quite transformative!’ He was like, ‘I would hope it does! You’re literally in the Batsuit.’ You do feel very powerful immediately. And it’s pretty astonishing, something that is incredibly difficult to get into, so the ritual of getting into it is pretty humiliating. You’ve got five people trying to shove you into something. Once you’ve got it on, it’s like, ‘Yeah I feel strong, I feel tough, even though I had to have someone squeezing my butt cheeks into the legs.’”

Pattinson also revealed that he was on the set of Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film, Tenet, when he got the call about his Batman casting, and that this gave him the opportunity to discuss the role with Nolan who had previously directed The Dark Knight Trilogy:

“It’s so bizarre. I was like, ‘What a coincidence this is happening. It’s absolutely crazy.’ I was talking about things to do with the Batsuit,” Pattinson recalls. “How to get more movements in it.”

Meanwhile, speaking to EW, Pattinson revealed that he’d been quietly chasing the role for some time, and worried that when news leaked about his potential casting that it may have cost him the role:

“I’d had Batman in my mind for a while,” Pattinson said. “It’s such an absurd thing to say. I sort of had an idea to do it, and I’d been prodding Matt. He didn’t accept any prods. I kept asking to meet him… When that thing leaked, I was fucking furious. Everyone was so upset. Everyone was panicking from my team. I sort of thought that had blown up the whole thing … It was terrifying. I was like, ’Oh fuck! Does that screw me because they are so intent on secrecy?’

For people who may still see Pattinson as the vampire in Twilight, a recommendation to watch some of his most recent work including High Life, Good Time, The Lost City of Z, and The Rover to witness his wide range of acting capabilities and the confidence that many people have that he can successfully embody the Batman.
