Rogue One: A Star Wars Story reshoots to bring the tone in line with A New Hope, rather than a “war movie”

June 1, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Yesterday it was reported that Disney has demanded reshoots on December’s Star Wars spinoff Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, with executives at the studio said to be unhappy with the first cut of Gareth Edwards’ Anthology movie, and the reshoots have now been confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, with the site also offering a few details as to the reasoning.

According to THR’s report, “the goal of the reshoots will be to lighten the mood, bring some levity into the story and restore a sense of fun to the adventure,” with the first cut said to have the feel of a war movie (which in fairness, is what director Gareth Edwards previously said he was going for) and “didn’t measure up to the bar set in terms of four-quadrant appeal.”

“This is the closest thing to a prequel ever,” states an unnamed source at THR. “This takes place just before A New Hope and leads up to the 10 minutes before that classic film begins. You have to match the tone! Anything less than extraordinary won’t do.”

What do you make of these reports? Is Disney right to bring the movie in line with the tone of Episode IV, or were you looking forward to seeing something a little different from the first Anthology movie? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is set for release on December 16th 2016, with a cast that includes Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything), Diego Luna (Milk), Ben Mendelsohn (The Dark Knight Rises), Donnie Yen (Ip Man), Jiang Wen (Let the Bullets Fly), Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland), Alan Tudyk (Con Man) and Riz Ahmed (Nightcrawler).
