Rumour: Mahershala Ali in contention for Commissioner Gordon role in The Batman

September 11, 2019 by Gary Collinson

With filming on The Batman expected to get underway before the end of the year, it’s only a matter of time before we start to get official news on the cast who’s sent to join our new Dark Knight Robert Pattinson in Matt Reeves’ version of Gotham City.

So far, there hasn’t been any word as to whether Reeves plans on retaining any of the DCEU cast for The Batman; however, if a new report from Collider is to be believed, Reeves is currently meeting with actors to take on the role of Gotham Police Commissioner Gordon, and has had talks with True Detective and Green Book star Mahershala Ali about the role.

Should Ali find himself in the role of Gordon, he’d been the third Oscar-winner in a row to portray the character on the big screen after Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight Trilogy) and J.K. Simmons (Justice League). That being said, the report does go on to caution that Ali’s commitment to Marvel’s Blade may well prevent his involvement with the Batman reboot, forcing Reeves to look elsewhere.

Surprisingly, beyond all the crazy speculation regarding Batman prior to Pattinson being announced, there’s been very little in the way of other casting rumours for The Batman, although John David Washington (BlacKkKlansman) has been linked to the role of Two-Face, and Vanessa Kirby (Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw) has been mentioned as a potential Catwoman.

Do you think Mahershala Ali would be a good fit for Gordon? Will you be disappointed if we don’t get to see more of J.K. Simmons in the role? Let us know in the comments or tweet us @FlickeringMyth…
