Rumour: Warner Bros. wants Justin Lin to direct live-action Akira

Despite numerous setbacks over the past decade, it seems that Warner Bros. is still very keen on its live-action manga adaptation Akira, with a rumour from Jeff Sneider on Meet the Movie Press suggesting that the studio is looking to Justin Lin (Fast & Furious 6, Star Trek Beyond) as the man to finally bring the project to life.

Lin recently signed on to direct Space Jam 2, but Sneider claims that the studio is willing to shuffle the schedule, stating that: “All I know is that Warner Bros. really seems to believe in Justin Lin and he is the target to direct Akira at this time.”

Warner Bros. first acquired the rights to Akira in 2002, although it wasn’t until 2013 that a director boarding the project in Jaume Collet-Serra (Non-Stop), but the project stalled amid budgetary concerns and controversies over casting. The last update came back in June of last year, when Daredevil co-showrunner Marco J. Ramirez signed on write a new script.
