Ryan Coogler pens 5-year Disney deal that includes a Wakanda Marvel Series for Disney+

February 1, 2021 by Matt Rodgers

The ever-expanding MCU has just got a little bit bigger with the news that Black Panther director Ryan Coogler has signed an exclusive television deal with Disney that includes a Wakanda based TV series for Disney+.

Deadline report that The Walt Disney Company have made a five-year overall exclusive television deal with Coogler’s Proximity Media, which he he runs with Zinzi Coogler, Sev Ohanian, Ludwig Göransson, Archie Davis and Peter Nicks. Coogler, who is in pre-production on Black Panther 2, which will hopefully begin shooting later this year, will make his first series as part of the deal a drama based in the Kingdom of Wakanda for Disney+.

Speaking about the deal, Executive Chairman of The Walt Disney Company, Bob Iger said “Ryan Coogler is a singular storyteller whose vision and range have made him one of the standout filmmakers of his generation. With Black Panther, Ryan brought a groundbreaking story and iconic characters to life in a real, meaningful and memorable way, creating a watershed cultural moment. We’re thrilled to strengthen our relationship and look forward to telling more great stories with Ryan and his team.”

Following the tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman, Coogler was already using the rich tapestry of Wakanda to flesh out Black Panther II, so maybe that creative process has opened up numerous avenues he can explore in the small screen format. Could this be how we get to see Michael B. Jordan’s Killmonger return to this world? The possibilities are endless.
