Severance renewed for season 3 with extended gap between seasons “definitely not” the plan

March 21, 2025 by Ricky Church

With the second season of Apple TV+’s hit sci-fi series Severance completed after today’s season finale, Apple wasted no time announcing it will return for a third season, this time without an extended 3-year-gap between seasons according to producer Ben Stiller.

Severance follows a group of people working at a tech company who have undergone a procedure to separate the memories of their personal and work lives with a deepening mystery of what the operation truly means. The series first premiered in 2022, but had a lengthy period of time between it and its second season which premiered in January due to busy schedules and the dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes of 2023.

Stiller and Apple CEO Tim Cook announced the renewal together in a playful bit of banter with a teaser announcement of the news. Audiences won’t have to wait as long for the next season, however, as Stiller has said that is “definitely not” their plan.

In an appearance on the New Heights podcast prior to the second season finale, Stiller clarified the gap will not be repeated. “No, no, the plan is not—definitely not. No, the plan is not, and hopefully, we’ll be announcing what the plan is very soon. That will not be that,” he said.

With the series’ official renewal, hopefully it will not be too long before we learn when production on the third season will begin and an expected premiere window.

Season 2 saw the return of Adam Scott, Britt Lower, Tramell Tillman, Zach Cherry, Jen Tullock, Michael Chernus, Dichen Lachman, John Turturro, Christopher Walken, Patricia Arquette, alongside new series regular Sarah Bock

In Severance, Mark Scout (Adam Scott) leads a team at Lumon Industries, whose employees have undergone a severance procedure, which surgically divides their memories between their work and personal lives. This daring experiment in “work-life balance” is called into question as Mark finds himself at the center of an unraveling mystery that will force him to confront the true nature of his work… and of himself.

In season two, Mark and his friends learn the dire consequences of trifling with the severance barrier, leading them further down a path of woe.
