Silver & Black director suggests Spider-Man spinoff could become Disney+ limited series

April 27, 2020 by Gary Collinson

Back in January it was rumoured that Sony had decided to revisit its aborted Spider-Man spinoff Silver & Black, albeit as a TV series rather than the originally planned feature film, and – according to comments from director Gina Prince-Bythewood (who was originally attached to direct the movie) – it seems the series may well have identified a home for itself in Disney+.

“I really love that project, and I do hope it can still happen in some way,” Prince-Bythewood tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It keeps going through different thoughts. First, it was going to be the two of them, and then the decision was made to separate the two. Now, there’s a thought of ‘Hey, maybe we put it on Disney+ as a limited series,’ but I loved it more as a film with the two of them. So, my hope is that one day it can still happen.”

Sony doesn’t have its own streaming service to compete with the likes of Disney+, HBO Max and Peacock, and given that it has numerous (at least “five or six” apparently) Spider-Verse shows in development, one would assume they’ll be looking to secure streaming distribution for the shows.

Disney+ already has major TV plans for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, WandaVision, Hawkeye, She-Hulk, Moon Knight and Ms. Marvel shows all announced, and with Sony’s Marvel projects existing outside of the MCU (for now, at least), a Silver & Black show set in different continuity may well prove a tad confusing to some subscribers.

That being said, it’s also possible that Disney wants to keep a monopoly on any and all Marvel-related streaming content, rather than having it appear on rivals such as Netflix. What are your thoughts? Would you like to see Sony/Marvel shows on Disney+? Let us know in the comments below or on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
