Sonic the Hedgehog 3 to begin production with no actors

August 9, 2023 by EJ Moreno

We are entering a wild time in the film industry, and the ongoing Hollywood strikes are causing productions to find alternative routes. Take Sonic The Hedgehog 3, for example, as the film enters production next month with a new strategy.

Screen Daily reports that the project is set to film without the use of SAG-AFTRA actors. For those wondering how that will work, the production of Sonic The Hedgehog 3 will start with shots involving CG animated characters.

The outlet also notes that no actors or filming equipment have been seen on the newly constructed sets, just Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles stand-ins for reference material. Filming is reportedly taking place in Surrey, England. The report notes that production will continue with actors in place once SAG-AFTRA and AMPTP agree on a new deal.

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 is set to star Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic, with James Marsden as Tom Wachowski, a small-town police officer, and Sonic’s friend, Tika Sumpter as Tom’s wife, Maddie. They’ll be joined by returning Tails, voiced by the game’s Colleen O’Shaughnessey, and Knuckles, voiced by Idris Elba.

It is currently unknown if filmmaker Jeff Fowler will return to direct. A Knuckles spin-off TV series for Paramount+ is also being developed, with Elba returning to voice the role.

There’s no release date for Sonic The Hedgehog 3 at the time of writing.
