Not too long ago Sony’s Amy Pascal made an offhand comment regarding how Spider-Man may never have a solo feature in the MCU again after a sequel summer’s hotly anticipated Spider-Man: Homecoming. She specifically stated, “it may never happen again”.
Tom Holland made his debut as the popular superhero in 2016’s box office juggernaut Captain America: Civil War, but it’s a little unclear what is left on his contract in regards to the MCU after his upcoming Avengers: Infinity War appearances (Marvel had said that Avengers 4 was as far as it goes for now, although the star did recently suggest he was contracted for two Homecoming sequels).
Thankfully, Spider-Man: Homecoming director Jon Watts has somewhat addressed these concerns over Skype at Australia’s Supernova Comic-Con, saying: “I don’t think she [Amy Pascal] meant that in an apocalyptic way. I think she was just trying to say what an unprecedented deal [it was] that Marvel and Sony teamed up.”
Realistically speaking, the business partnership is a lucrative one for both Sony and Marvel, so I really doubt there is any reason to worry. A number of Sony’s recent films have underperformed at the box office so they could honestly use all the help they could get.
Potentially complicating matters however could be the apparent dispute between the status of Sony’s upcoming spinoff movies Venom and Silver & Black, with Kevin Feige stating that they are separate from the MCU, and Amy Pascal seemingly believing that they exist in the same world as Spider-Man: Homecoming.
A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.
Spider-Man: Homecoming sees Tom Holland and Marisa Tomei reprising their roles from Captain America: Civil War as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Aunt May, alongside Marvel veterans Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark and Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan. New additions to the cast include Michael Keaton (Birdman), Jacob Batalon (North Woods), Michael Barbieri (Little Men), Zendaya (K.C. Undercover), Angourie Rice (The Nice Guys), Tony Revolori (The Grand Budapest Hotel), Logan Marshall-Green (Prometheus), Martin Starr (Silicon Valley), Donald Glover (Community), Laura Harrier (One Life to Live), Kenneth Choi (Captain America: The First Avenger), Hannibal Buress (Broad City), Isabella Amara (The Boss), Jorge Lendeborg, Jr. (Graceland), JJ Totah (Glee), Abraham Attah (Beasts of No Nation), Michael Mando (Better Call Saul), Selenis Leyva (Orange Is the New Black), Bokeem Woodbine (Riddick), Tyne Daly (Cagney & Lacey), Garcelle Beauvais (Hollywood Today Live), Tiffany Espensen (Kirby Buckets), Michael Chernus (Orange is the New Black), Jona Xiao (Halt and Catch Fire) and Martha Kelly (Baskets). The film is set for release on July 5th in the UK and July 7th in the States.
