Steven Spielberg to direct a UFO movie based on his own original idea

April 17, 2024 by Matt Rodgers

Steven Spielberg is once again set to look to the skies for inspiration with the news that the legendary Close Encounters of the Third Kind and War of the Worlds director is reportedly working on a UFO movie.

During a Variety report focusing on Martin Scorsese’s forthcoming projects, the topic turned towards the directing duos collaboration on a Cape Fear TV series for Apple TV+, before revealing that Spielberg will likely make his next feature a UFO film based on his own original idea, and that Jurassic Park and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny writer David Koepp is working on the screenplay.

Spielberg’s last movie was 2022’s semi-autobiographical coming-of-age drama The Fabelmans, but the Academy Award winning director has had some of his biggest successes when looking beyond the stars.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), E.T. the Extraterrestrial (1982), and War of the Worlds (2005) all dealt with visitors from another planet, while Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) steered the series towards science-fiction. The last time Spielberg worked closely with little green men was on producer duties for J.J. Abrams ode-to-Spielberg, Super 8 (2011).

Obviously at this early stage there is little to nothing known about the film, but let us know what kind of UFO story you’d like Spielberg to tell by heading to our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
