Straight Outta Compton earns a whopping $56.1 million

August 17, 2015 by admin

It’s been getting rather positive reviews (read ours here), and now the N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton has become another big money-winner for Universal, who are already having a great year.

Made on a reported budget of just $28 million, Straight Outta Compton went straight to the number one spot with a whopping $56.1 million domestic box office. This would make it the sixth biggest August opening, knocking off Rise of the Planet of the Apes from 2011.

Along with Jurassic World making it to $1.6 billion and with Furious 7 passing the $1 billion mark and Minions not far behind, it has been a great year for Universal.

In the mid-1980s, the streets of Compton, California, were some of the most dangerous in the country. When five young men translated their experiences growing up into brutally honest music that rebelled against abusive authority, they gave an explosive voice to a silenced generation. Following the meteoric rise and fall of N.W.A., Straight Outta Compton tells the astonishing story of how these youngsters revolutionized music and pop culture forever the moment they told the world the truth about life in the hood and ignited a cultural war.

Straight Outta Compton stars O’Shea Jackson Jr. as Ice Cube, Corey Hawkins (Non-Stop) as Dr. Dre, Aldis Hodge (A Good Day to Die Hard) as MC Ren, Jason Mitchell (Dragon Eyes) as Easy E, Neil Brown Jr. (Bayou Tales) as DJ Yella, Keith Stanfield (The Purge: Anarchy) as Snoop Dogg, R. Marcus Taylor (The Gathering) as Suge Knight, Rogelio Douglas Jr. (Whiplash) as Chuck D and Paul Giamatti (San Andreas) as Jerry Heller. It is set to open on August 14th in the States and August 28th in the UK.
