Suicide Squad crosses the half billion mark at the global box office

August 18, 2016 by Gary Collinson

It may not have impressed critics, but Warner Bros.’ Suicide Squad is certainly proving to be a big hit with audiences; the film smashed the August domestic opening record, and has now surpassed the half billion dollar mark at the box office, with the DC supervillain team-up hitting $509 million around the globe in just 13 days.

“It is incredibly rewarding to see audiences around the world coming out in such a big way for Suicide Squad,” states Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, president of worldwide distribution. “We have several major markets yet to open, and expect to continue seeing strong returns at the box office for the weeks to come.”

“We’re thrilled with the huge numbers on Suicide Squad, and to be coming out of an already highly successful summer with such a big win for our slate,” adds Sue Kroll, president of worldwide marketing and distribution. “The film is in position for another terrific weekend as our overseas expansion continues.”

Suicide Squad is still to open in Germany, where it will debut this weekend, and also has its Japanese opening set for next month. Domestically, the film is expected to earn around $20 million this weekend, where it will face new competition from War Dogs, Ben-Hur, Kubo and the Two Strings and Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV.

It feels good to be bad…Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?
