Sydney Sweeney shares Barbarella remake update

March 27, 2024 by Gary Collinson

Sydney Sweeney’s relationship with Sony Pictures has got off to a bit of a mixed start, with the box office success of the R-rated rom-com Anyone But You followed by the critical and commercial bomb of Madame Web.

However, as the star revealed in an interview earlier this week, her role in Sony’s latest Marvel stinker paved the way not only for the actress and producer to set up Anyone But You at the studio, but also in securing the title role in Sony’s long-planned Barbarella reboot.

Now, during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast to promote her latest film Immaculate [read our review here], Sweeney has opened up a little about the proposed Barbarella movie, confirming that it is still moving ahead as well as expressing her love for the character and the “campy” 1968 original starring Jane Fonda.

“I mean, Barbarella is just such a fun character to explore,” states Sweeney. “She really just embraces her femininity and her sexuality, and I love that. She uses sex as a weapon and I think it’s such an interesting way into a sci-fi world. I’ve always wanted to do sci-fi. So we’ll see what happens.”

Sweeney was also asked about the rumours linking Edgar Wright to the director’s chair on Barbarella, and while she stopped short of confirming or denying the Hot Fuzz and Baby Driver helmer’s involvement, she did acknowledge that she has become “acquainted” with the British filmmaker, who is yet to announce his next project following 2021’s Last Night in Soho.

Sydney Sweeney (Anyone But You, Euphoria, The White Lotus) stars as Cecilia, an American nun of devout faith, embarking on a new journey in a remote convent in the picturesque Italian countryside. Cecilia’s warm welcome quickly devolves into a nightmare as it becomes clear her new home harbors a sinister secret and unspeakable horrors.

Immaculate sees Sydney Sweeney starring alongside Simona Tabasco (The White Lotus), Alvaro Morte (Money Heist), Benedetta Porcaroli (Baby), and Dora Romano (The Hand of God).
