The Crown’s Claire Foy favourite to play Lisbeth Salander in The Girl in the Spider’s Web

May 16, 2017 by Gary Collinson

It looks like Sony may have found its new Lisbeth Salander for The Girl in the Spider’s Web, with Variety reporting that The Crown star Claire Foy is the top choice to play the rogue hacker in the relaunched and rebooted second instalment of the Millennium movie series.

Sony has reportedly met with dozens of actresses for the part, and previous rumours had suggested that Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman were contenders to take over the role played by Rooney Mara in David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The character was also portrayed by Noomie Rapace in the Swedish films The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest.

The Girl in the Spider’s Web is based upon the fourth book in the Millennium series, penned by David Lagercrantz. Evil Dead and Don’t Breathe director Fede Alvarez will helm the film, which is being scripted by Alvarez, Jay Basu and Steven Knight. Production will get underway in September, with the film set for release on October 5th 2018.
