The dream continues for The Sandman with season 2 renewal

November 3, 2022 by Ricky Church

The dreaming will continue as Netflix has renewed The Sandman for a second season. The news was announced a little prematurely by DC Comics’ Twitter account in a since deleted tweet, but was officially shared not long after by Netflix and Sandman creator Neil Gaiman. Watch the announcement teaser below…

“Millions upon millions of people have welcomed and watched and loved The Sandman on Netflix, from established Sandman fans to people who were simply curious, and then became obsessed with the Lord of Dreams, his family and their goings-on,” Gaiman said. “It gives me unbelievable pleasure to say that, working with Netflix and Warner Bros., Allan Heinberg, David Goyer and I will be bringing even more of The Sandman stories to life.”

On what fans can expect for the upcoming season, Gaiman said “There are some astonishing stories waiting for Morpheus and the rest of them (not to mention more members of the Endless Family to meet). Nobody is going to be happier about this than the Sandman cast and crew: They are the biggest Sandman fans there are. And now it’s time to get back to work. There’s a family meal ahead, after all. And Lucifer is waiting for Morpheus to return to Hell…”

The second season of The Sandman “will dive into that conflict and continue to explore the many challenges facing the universe in the wake of Morpheus’ century-long absence,” likely adapting the next to volumes in Gaiman’s groundbreaking graphic novel series Season of Mists and A Game of You. A surprise bonus episode was also released a couple weeks after Sandman‘s premiere which adapted some of the short stories from Dream Country so it is possible audiences could see stories from Fables and Reflections as well.

“I’m profoundly grateful to Netflix and to Warner Bros. — to the artists and crew who made our first 11 episodes so magical — and to the extraordinary fans of The Sandman, who advocated tirelessly — endlessly — on the show’s behalf and made it possible for us to continue telling Morpheus’ story,” said showrunner Allan Heinberg.

“And now we get to meet the rest of the Endless!” said executive producer David S. Goyer. “The support our partners at Netflix and Warner Bros. have given us has been phenomenal. And the fan response made the 10-year journey worth every obstacle. Truly, this has been a labor of love.”

Yes, it’s true: The Sandman will return to Netflix

There is another world that waits for all of us when we close our eyes and sleep — a place called the Dreaming, where The Sandman, Master of Dreams (Tom Sturridge), gives shape to all of our deepest fears and fantasies. But when Dream is unexpectedly captured and held prisoner for a century, his absence sets off a series of events that will change both the dreaming and waking worlds forever. To restore order, Dream must journey across different worlds and timelines to mend the mistakes he’s made during his vast existence, revisiting old friends and foes, and meeting new entities — both cosmic and human — along the way.

The Sandman stars Tom Sturridge (Irma Vep) as Dream, Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones) as Lucifer, Charles Dance (Game of Thrones) as Roderick Burgess, Boyd Holbrook (Narcos) as The Corinthian, Patton Oswalt (Happy!) as the voice of Matthew the Raven, Kirby Howell-Baptiste (The Good Place) as Death, Jenna Coleman (Doctor Who) as Johanna Constantine, Joely Richardson (Nip/Tuck) as Ethel Cripps, Mason Alexander Park (Cowboy Bebop) as Desire and David Thewlis (Harry Potter) as John Dee.

The Sandman Season 1 is available to view on Netflix.
