The Last of Us showrunnners lay out the roadmap beyond Season 2

June 10, 2024 by EJ Moreno

How do we unfold The Last of Us story going forward? With its in-depth story that takes you through many twists and turns throughout the second game, the show’s second season has a daunting task.

HBO’s award-winning drama will have its Season 2 finally arriving in 2025. Now, series co-creators, executive producers, showrunners, and directors Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann are giving us some insight into how they plan to make it unfold in an interview with Deadline, and it seems like Mazin and Druckmann envision the series running for three seasons and possibly four, given how much they have to unleash.

“The story material that we got from Part II of the game is way more than the story material that was in the first game, so part of what we had to do from the start was figure out how to tell that story across seasons,” Mazin said. “When you do that, you look for natural breakpoints, and as we laid it out, this season, the national breakpoint felt like it came after seven episodes.”

“We don’t think that we’re going to be able to tell the story even within two seasons [2 and 3] because we’re taking our time and go down interesting pathways, which we did a little bit in Season 1, too,” Mazin said. “We feel like it’s almost assuredly going to be the case that — as long as people keep watching and we can keep making more television — Season 3 will be significantly larger. And indeed, the story may require Season 4.”

“One thing is absolutely for sure: I don’t see how we could tell the story that remains after Season 2 is complete in one more season,” he said.

The Last of Us story takes place twenty years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.

The Last of Us season 2 sees the return of Pedro Pascal as Joel, Bella Ramsey as Ellie, Gabriel Luna as Tommy, and Rutina Wesley as Maria alongside new cast members Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Young Mazino as Jesse, Isabela Merced as Dina, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Spencer Lord as Owen, Danny Ramirez as Manny, and Catherine O’Hara in an undisclosed role.

The Last of Us season 2 is coming to Max in 2025.
