The Purge is becoming a TV series

April 4, 2017 by Ricky Church

Deadline is reporting that Blumhouse Productions, the company behind The Purge, is making a move into the television market with ITV Studios and one of their first projects is adapting the franchise into a TV series. Blumhouse will team with franchise creator and director James DeMonaco and Universal Cable Productions to bring The Purge to USA and SyFy.

On the news of the deal and The Purge television series, Blumhouse founder Jason Blum said: “Over the past few years, we have been working to build Blumhouse Television into an independent studio so we can have the autonomy to work with the best storytellers and give them freedom to create the best dark genre programming. It is a dream that day is here. Julian and his team at ITV are remarkable partners and we can’t wait to kick things off with The Purge and Secure and Hold. We are excited that with the launch of this new studio, we are expanding our partnership with NBCUniversal by growing The Purge franchise into a television series and are grateful for their incredible support of Blumhouse overall.”

The Purge takes place in a not-too-distant-future in America where all crime is acceptable for a 12 hour period one night of the year. The night is mostly an excuse for society to kill the homeless and others, but normal families and people are forced to protect themselves from gangs of killers throughout the franchise. Ethan Hawke, Lena Heady, Frank Grillo and Elizabeth Mitchell have starred in the trilogy.

Currently a fourth Purge film is set for July 4, 2018, with DeMonaco teasing it will be a prequel depicting how The Purge came to be an annual event in America.

How do you feel about a Purge television series? Do you think it has potential, or are you good with the films? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…
