The Week in Spandex – Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad, Captain America: Civil War, Ant-Man, The Punisher, Wolverine 3, Hellboy 3, Constantine and more

June 13, 2015 by Gary Collinson

In this edition of The Week in Spandex, we look at Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justie, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, Justice League, Supergirl, Constantine, Justice League: Gods and Monsters Chronicles, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, Captain America: Civil War, Doctor Strange, Daredevil, The Punisher, Jessica Jones, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H., Fantastic Four, X-Men: Apocalypse, Deadpool, Wolverine 3, Hellboy 3, Heroes Reborn and more…

It’s the San Diego Comic-Con International next month, and if you were looking forward to Marvel Studios’ annual Hall H extravaganza, then I’m afraid it appears you’re out of luck. Back in March, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn indicated that Marvel would skip SDCC this year, and it’s been reported this week that is indeed the case, although it’s yet to be officially confirmed by Marvel or Disney. Still, there is going to be plenty of superhero goodness, with Warner Bros. said to be planning a huge DC movie universe panel featuring Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman and Justice League Part One, while on the TV side of things WB will also be showcasing the likes of Arrow, The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Vixen, Gotham, Supergirl, Teen Titans Go! and Lucifer…

…Before Comic-Con, Warner Bros. took the opportunity to showcase Batman v Superman at the Licensing Expo in Las Vegas this week, and amid all the fake “promo art” that’s been doing the rounds, we did get a look at the costumes for Batman (Ben Affleck), Superman (Henry Cavill) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) as well as the new Batmobile [see here and here], not to mention an official synopsis for the film which reads: “Fearing the actions of a god-like super hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before…”

…If you thought you’d seen the last of the Suicide Squad set photos, think again! This week brought us some new shots of Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Will Smith (Deadshot), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flagg), Jay Hernandez (El Diablo) and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Killer Croc) [see here], along with Jared Leto’s Joker and our first look at Common as his as-yet-unrevealed character (who may or may not be the Tattooed Man?) [see here]…

…In other Suicide Squad news, Scott Eastwood has been speaking about Leto’s take on the Clown Prince of Crime, stating that he was “afraid to approach him”, while Jai Courtney has revealed that he “cringed” when he found out his character was called Captain Boomerang: “I hadn’t read a script at all when I signed on. We’d met on a couple of occasions and we’d spoken. And, to be honest, when he told me that the role of Captain Boomerang was what he was thinking, I kind of cringed. Cause I wasn’t a comic book kid. I wasn’t familiar with the DC universe and the history of that. So I knew nothing about it. And I was, like, ‘Oh, god, Captain Boomerang…Really? I really don’t know how Australians will react to this. And It’s funny, cause something like that you want to do right. And it’s been interesting finding the balance. But he’s the perfect guy to have on your side, because you look at some of the comic books and some of the old sixties stuff is so hammy, you know, and kind of camp. But, get a guy like David Ayer at the helm of a thing like this and it really gets kind of dark and gritty, and, you know, awesome. And he’s a stickler for authenticity. So I think what we’re going to create is going to be really, really cool…”

…As well as bringing us a new poster, CBS announced this week that its upcoming DC TV show Supergirl is set to premiere on Monday, October 26th…

…Sadly, it’s been confirmed by showrunner Daniel Cerone this week that Constantine won’t be returning for a second season, and that the series is now officially dead: “I promised I’d share news when I had it — sadly, that news is not good. The cast and writers of Constantine are being released from their contracts. The studio tried to find a new home for the show, for which we’re forever grateful, but those efforts didn’t pan out. I’m sorry, I wasn’t provided any information on the attempts to sell the show elsewhere. All I can report is that the show is over.” You can read Cerone’s full statement on Constantine’s cancellation here…

…On the DC animated front, Machinima has unleashed the first season of episodes of Bruce Timm’s latest project Justice League: Gods and Monsters Chronicles. The first episode sees Batman vs. Harley Quinn [watch it here] and the second Superman vs. Brainiac [watch it here], while the third focuses on Wonder Woman [watch it here]…

…Click below to continue on for Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, Captain America: Civil War, Doctor Strange, Daredevil, The Punisher, Jessica Jones, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H., Fantastic Four, X-Men: Apocalypse, Deadpool, Wolverine 3, Hellboy 3, Heroes Reborn and more…
