Universal Pictures passes $3 billion internationally for 2015

July 9, 2015 by Scott J. Davis

For the first time in the studio’s stellar 103-year history, Universal Pictures has grossed over $3 billion internationally, thanks to an unprecedented run of success throughout 2015 that has seen them take many other records with them. A large chunk of those grosses (almost two-thirds) are thanks to their summer juggernaut blockbusters Fast & Furious 7 and Jurassic World, with Fast 7 grossing over $1.16 billion internationally, swiftly followed by World which currently stands at $843.9 million but with plenty more time to match if not beat Fast’s total.

In addition, the likes of Fifty Shades of Grey ($403 million internationally), Pitch Perfect 2 ($96.6 million) and Minions ($141.7 million) have performed brilliantly as well, although the latter’s total will expand hugely once the complete roll-out of the film continues over the next few weeks, with the loveable yellow terrors opening in the US this Friday.

And the hits are set to continue, with both F. Gary Gray’s anticipated Straight Outta Compton and Amy Schumer/ Bill Hader/ Judd Apatow comedy Trainwreck both due for release in the next month and tracking big box office success.
