Venom looking to take a $175 million bite of the worldwide box office

October 3, 2018 by Amie Cranswick

The critical consensus may not be too kind, but it seems that Sony’s first Spider-Man spinoff movie Venom is on course to take a sizeable chunk of the global box office in its opening weekend.

According to estimates, the Tom Hardy-headlined blockbuster can expect to gross around $175 million around the world in its opening weekend, including a domestic take of between $60 and $65 million, which would surpass Gravity’s $55.7 million to set a new October record.

Venom is opening in most major markets, save for France, Japan and China – the latter of which is yet to set a specific release date. It also faces competition from Bradley Cooper’s acclaimed remake A Star Is Born, which is looking at a domestic haul of around $30 – $40 million.

Sony is hoping to use Venom to launch a brand new shared universe based around its various Spider-Man supporting characters, with the Jared Leto-headlined Morbius the Living Vampire said to be the next movie in the pipeline.

One of Marvel’s most enigmatic, complex and badass characters comes to the big screen, starring Academy Award nominated actor Tom Hardy as the lethal protector Venom.

Venom is directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) and features a cast that includes Tom Hardy, Riz Ahmed, Michelle Williams, Woody Harrelson, Jenny Slate, Reid Scott, Scott Haze, Sope Aluko and Ron Cephas Jones.
