Venom producer says “no timetable” for the sequel as yet

July 18, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Sony kicked off its Universe of Marvel Characters last year with the release of Venom, the Tom Hardy-headlined film defying critics and putting the shared Spider-Man-themed universe on a firm footing with a whopping worldwide box office haul $855 million.

With those kinds of numbers, it came as little surprise when Sony announced an October 2nd 2020 release for an ‘Untitled Marvel Sequel’, which – seeing as Venom is the only Marvel movie available to Sony for a sequel at present – seemed to indicate that the symbiote would be back on the big screen next year.

Well, it seems that this date isn’t set in stone, as producer Amy Pascal has now revealed to Comic Book that while Venom 2 is “in the works”, there is currently “no timetable” for its production or release.

In January of this year, it was announced that Venom writer and producer Kelly Marcel was actively working on the script for Venom 2, which will reportedly see the return of Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, Michelle Williams as Anne Weying, and Woody Harrelson as Cletus Kasady, a.k.a. Carnage. However, director Ruben Fleischer was yet to sign on, and Sony was said to be considering the possibility of bringing in a different filmmaker.

Assuming this October 2020 wasn’t been earmarked for a different movie, then reading between the lines it seems to suggest that while Sony may be keen to get the sequel out as quickly as possible, things aren’t quite ready to move forward yet. Whether that’s down to scripting, talent availability/scheduling – or perhaps even the whole Spider-Man rights situation with Marvel – we can but speculate. Hopefully we’ll get some official, concrete news soon.
