Warner Bros. denies rumour that Wonder Woman 1984 will skip theatrical release and go straight to streaming

March 21, 2020 by Gary Collinson

Warner Bros. has moved to dismiss a report suggesting that the studio was considering scrapping the theatrical release of the DC Extended Universe sequel Wonder Woman 1984 in favour of debuting the movie directly to streaming platforms.

With cinemas around the globe closing their doors in an effort to stem the coronavirus pandemic and the theatrical release calendar now seemingly on an indefinite hiatus, we’ve seen studios take unprecedented measures in order to try and make up the box office shortfall. A number of films have seen their digital releases brought forward (see the likes of Birds of Prey, The Invisible Man, Bloodshot, Frozen II, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and Onward), with Universal Pictures also opting to forego a theatrical release for the animated sequel Trolls World Tour to debut the movie directly to digital platforms.

Well, according to a report from The Wrap yesterday, Warner Bros. Chairman Toby Emmerich and top studio executives have been discussing the possibility going down the Trolls World Tour path with the Gal Gadot-headlined superhero sequel and completely skipping a theatrical release for the $200 million-budgeted blockbuster. However, IndieWire has reportedly confirmed with the studio that Wonder Woman 1984 will indeed receive a theatrical release, although it’s unclear whether the film will stick to its planned June 5th date, or find itself pushed back to later in the year.
