Whitney Houston’s The Bodyguard to get the remake treatment at Warner Bros.

September 16, 2021 by Matt Rodgers

It appears that Warner Bros. wish to express their “And I, will always love you” sentiment for 90s classic The Bodyguard by reimagining the beloved Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner blockbuster for a modern audience.

Variety reports that the studio have tasked Tony-nominated playwright Matthew López (The Inheritance) with reimaging the 1992 romantic-drama, which grossed $411M at the worldwide box-office and infinitely more than that with it’s best-selling soundtrack.

Originally written as a vehicle for Steve McQueen and Diana Ross, The Bodyguard follows a former United States Secret Service agent turned bodyguard (Costner) who is hired to protect a famous actress and singer (Houston) from an unknown stalker.

Lawrence Kasdan, who was writer and producer on the original film, will return to produce the remake alongside Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich of Rideback Productions.

There are no details on who will fill the roles made famous by Kevin Costner and the late Whitney Houston, which allows us all time to speculate about who we’d like to see belt out “I Have Nothing” or whether this could be another opportunity for a gender swap remake.
