Comic Book Review – TMNT: Bebop & Rocksteady Destroy Everything! #3

June 15, 2016 by Chris Cooper

Chris Cooper reviews TMNT: Bebop & Rocksteady Destroy Everything! #3…

Chaos spreads and the next stop in Bebop and Rocksteady’s itinerary is Stockgen when the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles where just regular baby Turtles!

My initial feeling upon seeing the artists for #3 this weekly series was one of deflation. No Sophie Campbell equals a sad Chris.

The abiding feeling I’m left with upon finishing the issue however is one of shock. I can’t go into it as it would constitute a mahoosive spoiler but suffice to say I saw something that really upset me. In a good story way mind you, I’m not outraged or anything. The very nature of this story, with all it’s time travelling, makes me wonder if anything we see happen will ultimately matter anyway. Would IDW let he outcome of a mini-series affect it’s main title?

To circle back round and pick up the art aspect we only have two artists this week – Ben Bates and Damien Couceiro, with Couceiro taking on the meat of it. I quite like his turtles even though they seem rather toothy. Some of his expressions remind of the original live action film which is never a bad thing. His Rocksteady looks particularly vicious too.

Overall I’m really pleased with how the story is progressing but there is one aspect that isn’t sitting well with me at all. Donatello breaking the fourth wall. He’s done it once before already and does so again. I don’t recall it happening before in IDW TMNT and it feels very out of place. Mikey is the conduit for things being explained; I don’t think we need to bed spoon fed as much as we are. Time travel is a complicated thing for sure but when it’s coming across well enough in the story itself there’s no need for more explanation.

That’s a nitpick though. The series is still going strong.

Rating: 6/10
