Rights to Namor the Sub-Mariner reportedly back at Marvel

May 25, 2014 by Gary Collinson

Over the past couple of years, Marvel Studios has reacquired the movie rights to many of its characters, and now it seems the studio may have bagged another, with Borys Kit of THR reporting via Twitter that Universal no longer has the rights to Namor the Sub-Mariner.

Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige had spoken about the situation surrounding Namor a few weeks back, stating that the rights to the character were “a little complicated”. This was followed up by speculation that Universal was looking to give the character a solo movie, slated for release in November 2016 (which is obviously false if Universal no longer has the rights).

Considering Universal has made no attempt to get a Namor movie off the ground, it would be surprising if the rights had not reverted to Marvel Studios, seeing as Fox lost Daredevil for failing to get a reboot off the ground within a specified time-frame.

However there is also the possibility that said complications could arise from Namor’s association with the X-Men, much like the characters of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, who are available to both Fox and Marvel Studios (with Quicksilver appearing in both X-Men: Days of Future Past and Avengers: Age of Ultron).

Would you like to see Namor as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and if so, in what capacity? Let us know your thoughts…
