Five characters who could be Star-Lord’s father

August 14, 2014 by Thomas Roach

Thomas Roach with five characters who could be Star-Lord’s father (warning – Guardians of the Galaxy spoilers follow)…

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has recently spoken about the identity of Star-Lord’s father in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. At this point, it is unknown if Star-Lord’s (Chris Pratt) father will feature in the sequel, but there is a chance – especially as his identity was teased at the very end of the first film. Gunn did say that he may show up if he is needed in the story, but that may not be necessary for the plot. Gunn also said that the character will not be the same as the comics, so therefore we can expect his identity to be tweaked. Here are five characters that could potentially be Peter Quill’s father…

J’son  of Spartax

Despite Gunn’s comments about Star-Lord’s dad not being the same character as the comics, it could very much well be. J’son is Star Lord’s father in the comic books, and is also the leader of the Spartoi Empire. He was on a military mission when he crashed on Earth only to be found by Meredith Quill. The couple fell in love and had Peter. In Guardians of the Galaxy Meredith Quill remarks that Peter’s father was an angel who came from the stars – this shows that the storyline may be kept, although the identity of the father could be changed. Gunn’s comments could mean that Peter’s father is still J’son, but his origins may have been changed for the movie version. This would be a likely and easy guess, but there seems to more people leaning away from this possibility after Gunn’s comments.

Thanos

Many people have already called Guardians of the Galaxy the new Star Wars so could the main villain be the father of our protagonist? Unlikely, but we should certainly not rule it out. We know so little about Thanos (Josh Brolin) at the moment and what he is capable of. Thanos already has Nebula and Gamora as his adopted children – who is to say that he doesn’t have more? Gunn actually stated that Thanos has some kids out there that he needs to take care of. The Mad Titan may in fact be Star-Lord’s father, although it’s highly unlikely as it would be copying Star Wars too much, but it is worth consideration.

Adam Warlock

Adam Warlock has actually been teased in both Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor: The Dark World. In both of these films we can see a cocoon which has been confirmed to contain Adam Warlock by director James Gunn. In the post-credits scene of Guardians we see that the cocoon has been opened and is empty. This means that the character of Adam Warlock has escaped. He has featured as part of the Guardians line up before and demand for him he will likely be in the sequel. Could this character be reworked as Star-Lord’s father? Maybe. However as he is a fan favourite, deviating from the source material with this character may upset loyal fans, but I could definitely see it working out well for the story.

Yondu Udonta

Yondu was played by Michael Rooker in Guardians of the Galaxy as is the paternal figure in Star-Lord’s life. Yondu remarks that he could have delivered Peter to his father as instructed, yet Yondu took him in for himself. Maybe Yondu is actually Peter’s father all along? I mean, he was the one who took him from Earth then raised him like a son. However, the film does suggest that Peter Quill has something more powerful in him so his father is likely to be some kind of cosmic entity instead. Regardless, I am sure Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will expand on the relationship between Yondu and Star-Lord.

The Beyonder

The Beyonder is one of the most powerful cosmic beings in the Marvel universe. He has yet to appear in any film incarnation but this would be a cool way to introduce him. The Beyonder has the power of omnipotence, omnipresence and omniscience, which essentially makes him god. The Beyonder being Star-Lord’s father would be an interesting move and a good way to introduce the character to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, despite the Beyonder featuring in several prominent Guardians of the Galaxy storylines – as well as his connection to the Cosmic Cube – the rights are blurred for the character and he may be owned by Sony due to the fact he first appeared in a Spider-Man comic book. Who knows though – maybe Marvel actually share the rights like they do with Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch…

Do you think any of these characters could be Star-Lord’s dad, and if not, who do you think it might be? Let us know in the comments…
