Guillermo Del Toro gives us Pacific Rim 2 plot details

November 26, 2014 by Luke Owen

Warning – spoilers for Pacific Rim below…

Having made $411 million worldwide at the box office, it was inevitable that a sequel for Pacific Rim would be in the works, despite the rather definitive editing. So, just how will Guillermo Del Toro continue the story?

In an interview with Collider, Del Toro has given us some insight in what we can expect from Pacific Rim 2, “It’s a few years after the first one,” he said. “It’s not an immediate follow-up. It’s the world having been freed of Kaiju, what happens to the world after – what happens to the Jaeger technology once the Kaiju are not a threat. It’s quite a jump.”

“It’s quite a different movie from the first one,” he adds. “But I think that two of our main characters like in the first one are Burn [Gorman] and Charlie [Day]. They are really, really – I mean, honestly, they are probably the guys I have the most fun writing along with Hannibal Chau so just from a purely selfish drive, I like writing them. I love writing for Charlie and Burn. I mean, [Burn is] in Crimson Peak for that reason, because I love working with him. You’re gonna get a lot of that, but the Kaijus are very different and you’re gonna see a very different type of the robots I think. It’s gonna be quite a different adventure.”

This of course suggests that Charlie Day, Burn Gorman and Ron Pearlman will be returning to the cast, be Del Toro offered no word on fellow stars Charlie Hunnam or Rinko Kikuchi.

Pacific Rim 2 will be released in 2016 with Guillermo Del Toro returning to direct.
