Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. showrunners discuss midseason finale revelations

December 11, 2014 by Gary Collinson

Warning: Spoilers for the midseason finale of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. follow…

Having teased the mysterious origin of Skye since the show’s premiere last year, last night’s midseason finale of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. finally revealed the true identity of Chloe Bennet’s character – and that of her father The Doctor, played by Kyle MacLachlan – as well as sewing the first seeds for the Inhumans movie in 2018.

In the episode, it was revealed that Skye is actually Daisy Johnson, a.k.a. Quake, the daughter of Calvin Zabo, better known as the supervillain Mister Hyde. In the comic books, Quake possesses seismic powers (the ability to induce earthquakes), and has served as a member of The Avengers and the Secret Warriors, as well as Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.

As well as revealing Skye’s true identity, the episode also took the first steps into the world of the Inhumans as the Obelisk opened to reveal a Terrigen Crystal, spraying Skye and Raina (Ruth Negga) with mist and presumably unlocking superhuman – or rather Inhuman – abilities in the pair.

Following the episode, showrunners Maurissa Tancharoen and Jed Whedon spoke to IGN to discuss some of the revelations:

“That was our goal from the beginning,” said Tanchoroen when asked if it was always planned to have Skye turn out to be Daisy Johnson. “We always knew we wanted to evolve her into something else. But we’ve been big fans of Daisy Johnson and Secret Warriors. I think that’s been pretty obvious in the series to date. So when we were given the go ahead to move forward with Daisy Johnson pretty early on, we were thrilled.”

“We’re thrilled to be able to dive into the introduction of the Inhumans,” Tancharoen continued. “Everything, as we know, everything is connected in the Marvel universe. Much like the way S.H.I.E.L.D., the organization, you got to see glimpses of it throughout the films, now we’re doing it the other way. And one will always affect the other, so we’re just excited to be the first to have the opportunity to start exploring that territory.”
