Tim Burton to direct live-action version of Disney’s Dumbo

March 10, 2015 by Scott J. Davis

After the huge success of Alice in Wonderland for Disney, director Tim Burton is set to re-team with the studio to helm a live-action version of the beloved classic Dumbo.

Burton, whose latest film was Big Eyes, a biopic of artist Margaret Keane, has been tapped to take the helm of the latest in a growing line of live-action versions of some of Disney’s most beloved films. The new version will again blend live-action with CGI, and is being written by Ehren Kruger (Transformers: Age of Extinction).

The original Dumbo, which was released in 1941, was Disney’s fourth animated film and tells the story of a young elephant who was mocked for his enormous ears by the circus folk around him, only to discover he can use them to fly.

Over the last few years, Disney had huge success with films such as Maleficent, which took over $750 million at the worldwide box office last year, as well as the $1b illion worldwide gross of Burton’s Alice in 2010. In addition, Kenneth Branagh’s version of Cinderella (starring Lily James and Cate Blanchett) hits cinemas this month, with Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book – featuring the vocal talents of Scarlett Johansson, Idris Elba, Christopher Walken, and Bill Murray – set for release in April 2016.

Burton’s next film is Miss Peregrine’s Home for Unusual Children, which stars Eva Green, Asa Butterfield and Samuel L. Jackson, and is set for release in March 2016.
