SDCC: M. Night Shyamalan is still keen on an Unbreakable sequel, but “it has to be a completely original take”

July 12, 2015 by Gary Collinson

Despite the fact that the movie was released fifteen years ago, it seems that M. Night Shyamalan can’t go a couple of months without being asked about the possibility of a sequel to Unbreakable, and sure enough IGN put the question to the filmmaker once again this weekend at the San Diego Comic-Con.

“The short answer to that is yes,” said Shyamalan when asked if he felt ready for an Unbreakable sequel. “I don’t want to do a traditional second movie, that turns me off. That’s what the benefit of doing a sequel is, everyone feeling familiar about the content, right? That actually turns me off about making movies, for me. It has to be a completely original take, if we were going to something unexpected. Unbreakable is about the ground take on the subject of comic books, a drama about the subject of comic books, and postulating whether this is quasi-possible, that there are people that are extraordinary in different ways and comic books have taken it and characterised it. Is it possible that the real life counterparts actually exist. That’s valid and of interest to me still.”

Back in May, Shyamalan also revealed that he’d be keen on continuing the Unbreakable story on TV via HBO or streaming services such as Amazon.
