Connie Nielsen to play Hippolyta in Wonder Woman, Chris Pine confirms World War I setting

January 15, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Yesterday we heard some potential casting news on Aquaman, with Amber Heard (Magic Mike XXL) in talks to play Mera, and now comes news on another DC Extended Universe movie, with The Hollywood Reporter revealing that Connie Nielsen has nabbed the role of Hippolyta in Wonder Woman.

Hippolyta is the mother of Diana (Gal Gadot) and the queen of Themyscira; the character made her first comic book appearance alongside her daughter way back in 1941’s All Star Comics #8.

Meanwhile, Chris Pine has been speaking to the Toronto Sun about the Amazon Princess’ solo movie, confirming what we’ve suspected given the set photos: that the film is set to take place – at least in part – during World War I.

“It’s a period we don’t see often; it’s usually World War II,” said Pine. “Our costume design is incredible. We have scenes with, like, 500 extras all in period dress. I’d never been on a film with extras casting as beautifully done as it is here. It highlights a really important point. When background casting is done well, it can make or break a scene. I’ve got people in deep background that have entire lives. It’s awesome, it’s actual make-believe land.”

Wonder Woman will hit cinemas on June 23rd 2017 with a cast that includes Gal Gadot (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), Chris Pine (Star Trek), Connie Niesen (Gladiator), Robin Wright (House of Cards), Danny Huston (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), David Thewlis (The Theory of Everything), Ewen Bremner (Snowpiercer), Said Taghmaoui (American Hustle), Elena Anaya (The Skin I Live In) and Lucy Davis (Shaun of the Dead).
