Producer Charles Roven discusses Suicide Squad competing cuts and defends Zack Snyder

August 19, 2016 by Gary Collinson

In the days leading up to the release of Suicide Squad, details emerged regarding the behind-the-scenes drama on the DC supervillain ensemble, with reports that Warner Bros. brought in Trailer Park, the company responsible for editing the first trailer, in order to produce a competing cut to that of director David Ayer.

During an interview with The Wall Street Journal, DC Extended Universe producer Charles Roven has confirmed that there were indeed several cuts for Suicide Squad, although he also downplayed its significance:

“Yes, there were a couple of different cuts of the movie, but they all really had to do with finding the final shape of the movie. I’ve been doing this for a long time, and that’s not the first time something like this has happened, and it won’t be the last. Sometimes, in order to get the work done, you really just have to bring on more people and spend really long days and nights getting work done to get it ready.”

Meanwhile, Roven also discussed the criticism directed towards Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and while he said that there was always plans for a tonal shift between that movie and Justice League, they have been listening to the reaction from fans.

“We did take into consideration some of the things that we learned from some of the comments about Batman v Superman,” said Roven, before offering a defense of director Zack Snyder, who had been rumoured to have been facing the chop from Justice League in the wake of the negative reaction. “You need to pay attention [to criticism], but you also need to stay true to your vision. Zack Snyder is a great director.”

Suicide Squad is out in cinemas now, while Justice League is set for release on November 17th 2017.
