Despite its obscure source material, Marvel Studios’ latest franchise Guardians of the Galaxy has enjoyed an out-of-this-world opening at the box office, pulling in $94 million domestically and $66.4 million from international markets for a global haul of $160.4 million. On home soil, Guardians has set a new August record and falls just short of the $95 million debut recorded by Captain America: The Winter Soldier back in April, while it has also managed to surpass the opening weekends of 2014’s other superhero movies The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ($91.6 million) and X-Men: Days of Future Past ($90.8 million).
Guardians of the Galaxy is out now, with a cast that includes Chris Pratt (The Lego Movie) as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana (Star Trek Into Darkness) as Gamora, Dave Bautista (Riddick) as Drax the Destroyer, Bradley Cooper (American Hustle) as Rocket Raccoon, Vin Diesel (Fast & Furious 6) as Groot, Benicio Del Toro (Sin City) as The Collector, Lee Pace (The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug) as Ronan the Accuser, Karen Gillan (Doctor Who) as Nebula, Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond) as Korath, John C. Reilly (Step Brothers) as Rhomman Dey, Michael Rooker (The Walking Dead) as Yondu, Glenn Close (Damages) as Nova Prime Rael and Josh Brolin (Men in Black 3) as Thanos.
