Scarlett Johansson to star in Ghost in the Shell

January 5, 2015 by Thomas Roach

A few months ago it was reported that Scarlett Johansson had been offered the lead role in DreamWorks’ live-action adaptation of the anime Ghost in the Shell, and now according to Variety, the actress has been successful and landed the role.

The original manga of Ghost in the Shell was released back in 1989 and was turned into an anime movie in 1995, along with an animatedseries from 2002-2003. Back in 2008 Steven Spielberg acquired the rights to the project for DreamWorks, having been a fan of the original anime.

Scarlett Johansson recently starred in the actioner Lucy as well as appearing as Black Widow in several Marvel Studios films, thus proving she can handle and carry an action movie.

So far Ghost in the Shell has no official release date but has Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) set to direct.
