Peter Davison says he “has trouble with the idea of a female Doctor”

February 1, 2015 by Gary Collinson

It seems every time the search is on for a new lead in Doctor Who, the question is raised about whether the BBC could introduce a female Doctor into the long-running sci-fi series. So far it hasn’t happened, and if it was down to the Fifth Doctor Peter Davison, it won’t ever happen either, as he’s revealed that he’s against the idea…

“I speak now as a fan who grew up watching it,” Davison tells ABC Australia. “I have trouble with the idea of a female Doctor, only because I reckon if you’re born on Gallifrey a man, you’re probably a male Time Lord. It seems to me if you reverse that, if you have an uncertain, fallible female Doctor with a really strong male companion, you’ve got more of a stereotype than anything else.”

As we’ve seen with Missy / The Master in the most recent series of the show, gender isn’t fixed for Time Lords, so the precedent has certainly been set for the BBC to introduce a female version of the iconic Time Lord.

What do you make of Davison’s comments, and would you like to see a female Doctor? Let us know your thoughts…
