The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that the cast of Independence Day 2, the long-awaited sequel to Roland Emmerich’s 1996 blockbuster, has swelled further with a new addition.
Charlotte Gainsbourg (Nymphomaniac) is in talks to join the cast, which would see her join Jeff Goldblum, Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher and Bill Pullman, though Pullman’s involvement is still not 100% confirmed at this time.
The original Independence Day was a massive success back in 1996, with a huge $817.4 million worldwide gross, and talk of a sequel started even then, but it is only in recent months that concrete plans have emerged.
Gainsbourg’s role is yet to be confirmed, while details on the storyline are also secretive. What has been confirmed is that Usher will be playing the son of Will Smith’s Captain Steven Hiller, Dylan, and that Hemsworth is reportedly playing the son-in-law of Pullman’s President.
Set to start shooting in May, Independence Day 2 sees Emmerich return in the director’s chair, alongside regular producing partner Dean Devlin.
Independence Day 2 is set for release in June 2016.
