Steven Moffat confirms that Sherlock special will be set in Victorian London

March 17, 2015 by Gary Collinson

Wondered what Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman and company were doing in Victorian clothing in the set photos from the upcoming Sherlock special last month? Well, we now have the answer, as Steven Moffat has revealed to EW that the 90-minute special is set to take place in Victorian London.

“The special is its own thing,” said Moffat at SXSW. “We wouldn’t have done the story we’re doing, and the way we’re doing it, if we didn’t have this special. It’s not part of the run of three episodes. So we had this to do it – as we could hardly conceal – it’s Victorian. [Co-creator Mark Gatiss] and me, we wanted to do this, but it had to be a special, it had to be separate entity on its own. It’s kind of in its own little bubble.”

As yet there’s no confirmed air date for the Sherlock special, but expect it around Christmas or the New Year.
