Benicio Del Toro officially confirms Star Wars: Episode VIII villain role

September 3, 2015 by Gary Collinson

It’s been a busy day for Star Wars news, what with all the toy reveals, comic book previews and a new banner for Star Wars: The Force Awakens [check out all of our coverage here], and now we have confirmation from Benicio Del Toro (Guardians of the Galaxy) that he’s set for a villainous role in Star Wars: Episode VIII.

“Star Wars is coming up, we will see how that turns out,” Del Toro told Spanish site Rac1 (via Star Wars 7 News). I think we start shooting in March… They don’t let me talk too much about it, I’m like the villain.”

Del Toro won’t be the only new cast edition for the Rian Johnson-directed sequel, with a report emerging yesterday suggesting that Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black), Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin) and Olivia Cooke (Bates Motel) all top the shortlist for a mysterious new female lead role.

Star Wars: Episode VIII will hit theaters on May 26, 2017.
