Luther creator Neil Cross to pen Escape from New York remake

It looks like 20th Century Fox’s remake of the John Carpenter cult classic Escape from New York has found itself a writer, with The Hollywood Reporter revealing that Neil Cross (Luther, Mama) has signed on to pen the script.

The new version of Escape from New York is set to be executive produced by Carpenter, with Fox aiming to relaunch the property as a franchise, much like it did with the Planet of the Apes series in 2011.

Released in 1981, Escape from New York starred Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken, a war hero turned criminal who is tasked with rescuing the President from Manhattan Island, which has been turned into a maximum security prison. It was followed in 1996 by the sequel Escape from L.A..
