Earlier in the week Captain America: Civil War overtook Deadpool at the worldwide box office, and now it has surpassed Warner Bros.’ Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice to become the highest-grossing superhero movie of the year so far with $940.9 million.
Civil War is now the sixth-biggest comic book movie of all time behind The Avengers ($1.518 billion), Avengers: Age of Ultron ($1.405 billion), Iron Man 3 ($1.215 billion), The Dark Knight Rises ($1.085 billion) and The Dark Knight ($1.005 billion). It’s also the second-highest grossing film of the year so far behind Zootopia ($969.8 million) and is sure to overtake the fellow Disney release in the coming days.
The success of Civil War has also extended the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s lead as the highest-grossing movie franchise in history, with the MCU having now cracked the $10 billion mark with its thirteen releases in just nine years. An incredible run of form.
Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” finds Steve Rogers leading the newly formed team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. But after another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps—one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark’s surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability.
