Disney in early development on live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid

May 26, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Fresh from the box office success of The Jungle Book and the first trailer for Beauty and the Beast, it looks like Disney could be adding another live-action adaptation from its animated back catalogue to its upcoming slate, with Deadline reporting that the studio is in early development on The Little Mermaid.

According to the site, initial discussions have taken place with major producers with a view to bringing Ariel back to the big screen following the classic 1989 animated feature, which won two Oscars for Best Original Score and Best Song (‘Under the Sea’).

Much like The Jungle Book, where Warner Bros. is also developing its own version, should Disney decide to move forward with The Little Mermaid it will face competition from Universal and Working Title’s own adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s tale, which has Chloe Grace Moretz attached to star.
